Caroline Buell, daughter of Elias and Sarah (Hammond) Buell, b. November 12, 1826 in Indiana. Married 1st May 04, 1847 to James Lindsay Findley. They went over Oregon Trail in 1847 with party led by her father. Other Findleys were traveling near the Buell train, and near the Dalles, they met Josiah Osborn, who was traveling to the Whitman mission. Josiah was married to Margaret Findley, the half 1st cousin of Caroline's husband. Caroline and James continued Ft. Vancouver, where he died December 23, 1847. Their daughter Sarah B. Findley was born March 28, 1848. Caroline married 2nd March 25, 1849 John R. Courtney. John's mother was the grand-aunt of Caroline's first husband; Caroline's husbands were first cousins, once removed. Caroline died April 27, 1897 per her daughter, but an earlier grave survey and gravestone show the year as 1898, not 1897. More information about this family can be found in the address by her daughter Sarah Findley Radford to the Oregon Pioneer Association on June 17, 1926.
