Jesse Augustus Yeates was born in Starkville, Oktibbeha, Mississippi 1831, his parents are unknown but in the 1850 Oktibbeha, Mississippi census he was 21 and living w/ a Joseph Yeates, age 35 and his wife Mary, age 21. Since Joseph and Mary are too young to be his parents it is assumed that this couple are relatives, possibly a brother and his wife.

According to the Mississippi Marriages 1776-1935 on October 19, 1852 in Lowndes, Mississippi he married Margaret E Robertson. Her name is Robinson on two of her children's death certs but the marriage record gives it as Robertson.

Sometime after their marriage they moved to Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama.
They had the following children;
James Kyle "Carl" Yeates 1853-1921 this son shows up in census reports and U.S. City Directories as James K or Kyle but on his Alabama Death and Burials Index record his name is Carl Yeates and it gives his birth death and parents all that match James K or Kyle Yeates. Assuming Carl was a nickname...
other children of Jesse and Margaret Robertson/Robinson Yeates were...
Causer Yeates
1856 (who is called Annie in the 1880 census, but is not to be confused with Jesse's second daughter named Annie born in 1877 from his second marriage to Ruth Critz) ARE WE CONFUSED YET?
more on his children;
Creola Yeates 1858-1930
Lizzie Yeates 1862
Lorena Yeates 1863
Gregory Yeates 1865
Richard Yeates 1873 ...all these chidren are in the 1870 census of Mobile Alabama.
The 1870 census of Mobile County, Alabama gives his occupation as a wholesale grocer.
In 1870 and 1871 U.S. City Directories of Mobile County, Alabama he is listed with an occupation as a grocer in J A Yeates & Company located on 30 N Commerce and his home address as 91 N Franklin.
In the US City Directories of 1873 he still lives at 91 N Franklin but his occupation is given as a salesman of the L Brewer & Company.
In the Mississippi Marriages 1776-1935 on April 11, 1875 at the age of 44 he married Ruth Virginia Critz, it is not known if his first wife Margaret died or they divorced, there has been no burial records found and there has been a Margaret Yeates found but not sure it is the same Margaret that married Jesse Yeates.
Although Jesse and Ruth were married in Mississippi they made their home back in Mobile, Alabama where in 1875 he is still employed by L. Brewer & Company and resides at 61 St. Louis. Right under his name in the directory there is J. Kyle Yeates with the same residential address as Jesse and then it is listed Yeates, J.K. & Co. (J.Kyle Yeates & Co) commission merchants, 13 St. Louis.
In 1880 Mobile County, Alabama census, Jesse is listed as a grocery clerk and he and wife Ruth are found with their blended families...both his children from Margaret and his child from Ruth, but wait...more confusion...
Annie 25 is the same age as Causer from the 1870 census with Margaret. Then there is Creola, Lizzie, Lorena, Gregory and Richard that were Margaret's children. There is a Ruth age 5 that would be Ruth's but there should be the second Annie as her death records show she was born in 1877 to Jesse and Ruth Critz Yeates???? ARE WE CONFUSED YET???
Did the enumerator think that when they mentioned the second Annie he already had her listed and didn't ask anymore questions?
On September 5, 1881 there was another child born to Jesse and Ruth Critz Yeates, a son, Jesse France Yeates. Now their family is complete with two daughters, Ruth Penn Yeates and Annie Short Yeates and Jesse France Yeates.
In the US City Directories of Mobile County, Alabama in 1882 he is a clerk at L.Brewer & Co and they live at NS State 3 E Claiborne
and again in the US City Directories of Mobile County, Alabama in 1889 he is working for RL Polk & Company and lives at 1800 3rd Ave.
Jesse Augustus Yeates died on March 19, 1897. It is not known whether he died in Mobile County, Alabama or Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, his wife Ruth passed away in 1910 in Jefferson County, Alabama but was taken to Oktibbeha County, Mississippi and buried next to Jesse.
