Nellie Newton, 81, former sales clerk

PEABODY - Nellie (Hartman) Newton, 81, of 8C Rockdale Park, wife fo Sidney V. Newton, died Mondy at J.B. Thomas Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Danvers, daughter of the late Charles E. and Nellie (Russell) Hartman, she had been a resident of Peabody most of her life.
She had been a sales clerk at the Almy;s department store in Salem for 14 years before retirement in 1969.
She was a former memeber of the Rockdale Park Association and a member of the Golden Age Club of Peabody and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Surviving her besides her husband, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage, are two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Priscilla) Winsor of Peabody and Mrs. Francis (Phyllis) Cosman of Middleton, four grandsons, four great-granchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the Francis L. Conway and Sons Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St. Peabody followed by services in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Peabody at, 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
Visting hours at the funeral home will be on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Nellie was a 9th great granddaughter of Stephen Hopkins and his first wife Mary. She descends through his daughter Constance and also through their son Giles. Stephen Hopkins was one of the original passages on the Mayflower. He was also the only Mayflower passenger to have first been also part of the settlement of Jamestown, VA. She is also a descendent of John Proctor from Salem Village. John, her 7th gr grandfather, and her 6th gr grandparents, Benjamin and Mary (Buckley) Proctor, were all accused of witchcraft in the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. John was hanged 19 Aug 1692, his son and daughter-in-law were spared as the Trials ended before execution could be carried out.
Since the photo of the headstone was taken, a Descendant of the Mayflower medallion has been added to the stone.
