Susanna Louisa Ginder was born on July 24, 1797, in Philadelphia, the daughter of Augustus T. Ginder (Gunther/Ginther) (1762-1807), a German native, and Philadelphia native, Anna "Elizabeth" Gillman (1770-1807). Susanna Louisa was the granddaughter of Adolph Gillman (1728-1780), of Steinfurth, Hessen, Germany, and Anna "Catharina" Kreider (1732-1773) of Soedel, Hessen, Germany. Her great uncle was Martin Kreider, a Philadelphia Innkeeper who ran Golden Swan Inn on Third street. Her great grandfather was Johan Ernst Kreuder/Kreuter who was a Court scribe of Soedel, Oberhessen, Germany. He was born in Grunberg, Hessen, Germany.

Susanna Louisa Ginder was baptized on September 12, 1797, at St. Michael and Zion's Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, the same church where her parents married on October 17, 1790, and grandparents, Adolph Gillman and Catharina Kreider, on January 1, 1756.


On February 21, 1807, Susanna Louisa's father, Augustus T. Ginder died, and her mother, Elizabeth Gillman Ginder died on 16 Sep 1807, and her last address on Second st. The Philadelphia city directory listed her as "Ginder, Elizabeth, boarding house, 66 Vine". She also was a shopkeeper and milliner for 201 N. Second st from 1800 to 1806.

On November 26, 1812, at the age of fifteen, Susanna Louisa Ginder married to a Hamburg native, and a German goods merchant, John Jacob Sommer, who was in his forties, at St. John's Evanlegical Lutheran church. John Jacob was a lifelong bachelor.

Their children were baptized at St John's Evanlegical Lutheran church. They were Elizabeth Sommer (1813-1814); John Jacob Sommer (1814-?); Susanna Louisa Sommer (1816-1902) married Churchill Houston; Henry Augustus Sommer (1818-1894); William A Sommer (1819-1904) m. Clara Struble; George William Sommer (1821-1822); Elizabeth Wilhelmina Sommer (1823-1907) m. William Sutcliffe (1809-1893); Fredericka Carolina Philippina Sommer (1826-1917); Georgiana Henrietta Sommer (1828-1915); and Augusta Maria Antoinette Sommer (1834-1835).

Susanna Louisa Ginder Sommer died on May 30, 1895, at the age of 98, at St. David's, Wayne, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and was buried on June 3, 1895, at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
