William A. Sommer was born on December 27, 1819, in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. He was the son of a Hamburg native and a German goods merchant, John Jacob Sommer (1769-1847), and a second generation Philadelphia German, Susannah Louisa Ginder (1797-1895).

William was baptized at St. John's Evanlegical Lutheran Church on Race Street, which was demolished in 1924.

William married to Clara Struble (marriage date unknown), and they had Emma Sommer Lentz (1845-1919); William Sommer (1847-1902); John Jacob Sommer (1850-1906); George W. Sommer (1851-1903); Susanna Sommer (1855-1858); and Clara Sommer Smith (1858-1918).
