John Jacob Sommer was born in Hamburg, Germany in about 1769. He came to Philadelphia and ran a mercantile business selling German goods on Race street and on Second street.
On November 26, 1812, at St. John Evanlegical Lutheran Church on Race street, a lifelong bachelor at age 43, John Jacob Sommer married to Susanna Ginder who was 15. They had Elizabeth Sommer (1813-1814); John Jacob Sommer (1814-?); Susanna Louisa Sommer (1816-1902) married to Churchill Houston, a Philadelphia merchant (1785-1845); Henry Augustus Sommer (1818-1894); William A Sommer (1819-1904); George William Sommer (1821-1822); Elizabeth Wilhelmina Sommer (1823-1907) m. William Sutcliffe (1809-1893); Fredericka Carolina Philippina Sommer (1826-1917); Georgiana Henrietta Sommer (1828-1915); and Augusta Maria Antoinette Sommer (1834-1835).
