Robert William Maassen, was born in Valley Township, Iowa, to William & Emma Andresen, Maassen, their youngest child. Inducted into the USMC in 1944, Maassen trained as an antitank gunner and was attached to the 24th Replacement Draft. He joined Baker Company, 24th Marines during the battle of Iwo Jima, where he served as a rifleman. Discharged about 1946 with rank of corporal.
Robert married Margaret C. Schueman, in 1949 in Avoca, IA.
Margaret is the daughter of Rudy and Grace Schueman. Robert and Margaret had two daughters, Sharlene & Kristie.
