Samuel Ellis Ake was the son of Samuel and Della Clara McCormick Ake. Their eleventh child of sixteen, he moved with his father and most of the Ake children to Georgia after their mother died in 1910. After a short stay near Waycross, the family relocated to Jacksonville about 1915.

Samuel Ellis Ake married Polly Pomelie Walters on 14 Aug 1922 in Jacksonville, Duval, Florida. They were married 56 years and became the parents of two children, Mannette and Elwin. He worked as a machinist according to his census records.

The Florida Times-Union published his death notice on 18 September 1978 in Section B on Page 4.

"Funeral services for Mr. Samuel E. Ake will be at 10am Tuesday at the graveside in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Ake of 4223 Lakeside Dr., who had lived here 60 years, died Sunday. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Polly P. Ake; a daughter, Mrs. Mannette Rutledge; a son, Elwin E. Ake; a number of brothers and sisters, including Mrs. Verne LaFaye, Mrs. Hazel Warren, and Ronald C. Ake of Jacksonville; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. George H. Hewell and Son Northside Funeral Home is in charge."
