After her mother died in 1910, Hazel quit school to care for her nine younger brothers and sisters. She remained close to them and the older Ake children throughout their lives.
Hazel married John Audy Warren, May 15, 1919, in Jacksonville, Duval, Florida. According to a family story, they married on his lunch hour and after the wedding he went back to work. Together, they raised six children, four daughters and two sons, on Ionia Street in Springfield. After John died she kept house for her brother, Ronald C. "Lonnie" Ake, on Park Street in Riverside and St. Johns Avenue in Avondale.
She was an accomplished needlewoman who enjoyed sewing for her family and her church. She could crochet anything after looking at a design and figuring out the pattern. She cooked without recipes and was more comfortable making the large quantities needed to feed her brothers and sisters on the Indiana and Georgia farms than cooking for two. Her chicken and dumplings were legendary.
Always a Hoosier, Hazel came to love Florida. She shares a grave marker of rose-pink Indiana granite with her husband.
The Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville, Duval, Florida, published her death notice 4 Nov 1982, Section B, page 11, column 7.
"Mrs. Hazel Ake Warren, of 4436 St. Johns Ave., died Wednesday in a local hospital. She was a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana and had resided here for the past 70 years.
