Per Trisha Cobb: William Bird Allen was murdered (shot and hanged) by northern bushwhackers during the Civil War (Ref: p.229, Goodspeed's 1868 History of Andrew & DeKalb counties). William Bird Allen (called Bird Allen) came to Missouri from Pulaski County, KY. He was the son of David Allen and Martha B. 'Patsey' Harris. he was the brother of Richmond Harrison Allen who married Patsey Jane Wood and is buried in the town cemetery at Whitesville. Rachel Mahala Allen, a first cousin of Bird Allen, married Lafayette 'Lafe' Irvine who was also murdered by northern bushwhackers during the Civil War (Ref: Goodspeed's 1868 History p.233). America Adams wife of Bird Allen was an aunt of Elias Wood, a long time resident of Andrew County. The Kentucky families in Andrew County of Allens, Woods, Floyds and Adams were closely related. NOTE: Cemetery inscriptions of the Yates Cemetery published by the Andrew County Historical Society showing W.B. Allen's age at death of 15 yrs 6 mo. is in error. Should be: 45 yrs 6 mos.

Per Maud Bliss Allen's book on Samuel Allin: William Bird Allen was shot by soldiers in the presence of his parents when he was called out to talk with them; @ that time there were soldiers who joined the KKK & were bitter w/those who had not enlisted; this was probably one of the cases, real murder, for there were many reasons why some men had not enlisted for the Civil War; the vigilante committee as they were called themselves never waited for any explanation from their victims but shot them in cold blood.
