Matilda was the daughter of Joseph and Malinda Fite. When she was eight years old, the family moved to Ripley County, Indiana. In 1869, Matilda and her sister moved to Lawrence County, Illinois.
She married Jackson Martin in 1874. They became the parents of five children of whom three did not survive infancy.
Matilda was survived by her husband, two daughters (Mrs. J. P. and Mrs. B. F. Richardson), five grandchildren, four sisters (Ursula Martin, Almeda Ridgley, Sarah Stratton and Rebecca Hutson) and two brothers (Henry Fite and Daniel Fite).
Reverend J. H. Voliva officiated the funeral service.
