William Bowman was born about 1813 in Virginia, the son of Jacob and Nancy Bowman. In 1832, he moved with his parents and siblings to Indiana where in 1837 he entered 80 acres from the U. S. government in Walnut Township, Montgomery County. On Dec 8, 1836, he married Elizabeth Loop, daughter of Christian and Eva (Airhart) Loop. They had one daughter, Sarah. Upon Elizabeth's death, he married Sarah (Airhart) Bowman, the widow of his older brother Joseph Bowman, on Dec. 20, 1840 in Boone County. William and Sarah (Sallie) had two children, Lyda and Fanny. In their later years, they moved to Howard County, Indiana where both are buried in the Barnett Cemetery although only Sallie has a stone.

The 1850 Census shows William Bowman (age 37, born in Virginia) living in Jackson Township, Boone County, Indiana with wife Sally (age 37) and daughter (by his first marriage) Sarah J. (age 14) and daughters (by his second marriage to Sally) Lyda Ann (age 8) and Fanny D. (age 7). The 1860 Census shows William Bowman (age 48, born in Virginia) living in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, Indiana with wife Sarah (age 48). The 1870 Census shows W. M. Bowman (age 51) living in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, Indiana with wife Sarah (age 58). The 1880 Census shows William Bowman (age 66) living in Ervin Township, Howard County, Indiana with wife Sarah (age 69) and granddaughter Addie Swayze (age 19).
