James Franklin Long 5th child of James and Matilda Markley Long was born August 17, 1845 and died Aug. 17, 1922 . In October of 1871 he married Francis Jane Underwood born Aug 13, 1843 and died Sep 15, 1891. She was the daughter of William and Fanny Underwood of Liberty Township Wood County Ohio. Francis was a school teacher and taught 9 terms in the district schools. James attended Ashland Academy, an old pioneer school at Ashland Ohio. He attended from the age of four ad a half years of age through eleven years of age. His parents James and Matilda (Markley) Long moved to Crawford County this was the end of his formal schooling.

He was a long successful farmer, he was an active church worker and was instrumental in the building and being involved in the establishing of the Cloverdale United Brethern Church which is now a Bowling Green address and now known as the Cloverdale United Methodist. He was considered a good citizen, a worthy and useful worker toward any cause he thought to be honarable and trustworthy and gave freely of his time to such a cause. James Franklin Long and Francis Underwood Long were the parents of five children, after Francis death, James married Susannah Reese in 1891, they had no children. James married for the thrid time in 1913 to Laura Markley they also had no children.

James Franklin worked for his parents until his enlistment on Aug 12, 1862. It is told that he lied about his age as he lacked only five day's of being 17 years old. James was a member of Company L 10th O.V.C. Leaving Cleveland Ohio the Company was sent to Murfreesboro TN. The company's first encounter was at Snow Hill. James participated in all of his Regiments engagements until he was wounded March 10, 1865 at Kilpatricks Surprise in Solomons Grove N.C. James was then taken dow Cape Fear from Wilmington Hospital to Smithland where he remained until July 3,1865 thence to Cleveland about the time the rest of his Regiment was discharged August 10, 1865. He then went to Crawford County to the home of his parents where he and his brother John cut 2,400 cords of four foot length wood in four winters. In October of 1865 he traveled to center Township, Wood County Ohio and for the sum of $300.00 made a payment on 80 acres of timberland. He had saved this amount from his Army pay. Returning to Crawford County he worked there for four years until 1869 when he returned to Wood County. James made the improvements on this acreage, sold it then purchased 40 acres in section 3 of Portage Township in the spring of 1871. All but one and a half acres of this was timer. He improved it gradually and his great granddaughter of Francis Bockbrader resides there now 1994 with her family William P Kale and daughter Katelin and Kelsie.
