James Long Jr. eldest son of James and Susannah (Knight) Long was born @ 1817 in Green County, PA. He was just a child when his parents moved to Wayne County Ohio @ 1820. A story has been passed down that one of the young Long children was racing his horse and buggy when an accident occurred resulting in the buggy stay piercing the horses chest killing the horse. The boy and his father had words resulting in the boy running away from home. We believe this may have been James Jr. as he ran away from home at the age of 15 incurring the wrath of his father who cut him from his will.

James went to Ashland Ohio where he went into the Pump making and well digging business for himself. He hired Joel Markley to assist him. It appears that he did keep in contact with his family as he introduced Joel Markley to his sister Lovina and they later married.

James Long married Joels sister Matilda Markley daughter of Peter and Mary (Polly) Markley. James and Matilda moved to Ocola, Ohio where they set up housekeeping on a 20 acre farm on the Spore Brandywine road. James was a Democrat and took great interest in the success of his party, he did not aspire to office but held several minor positions. They had 5 children before Matilda died. Lovina, John, Joseph, Sarah Jane, and James Franklin Long.

For his second wife James Long married Sophia Shaffer on February 28, 1859. Sophia was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Shaffer listed on the 1850 Census of Crawford County Holmes Twp., Sophia was born in 1837.

From members of the family the story has been passed down that Susan, Charlotte, and Elta along with several relatives died from tuberculosis.

Along with this terrible tragedy on the 23rd day of October 1871, Sophia was 2 months with child (William Douglas Long) when she received news that her husband James had died while digging a well.

James and his helper had been down in the well with a lookout posted at the top, this was to pull them from the well in case of a gas coming into the well or running out of oxygen this was alled the damps. The lookout was called to the barn when a horse kicked through the stable and broke his leg. By the time the lookout had arrived back at the well James and his helper were both dead. This was a terrible blow to Sophia and in order to survive she left Phillip go with a neighbor Colonel Mead as a border.

Nancy was listed with another family as a servant, Delilah was placed in an orphanage at Kirby Ohio. We do not know as yet what happened to her son William. Either Sophia kept him or when he was a little older he may have went with Phillip as he and his brother were very close all their lives. (yes we now know that William did follow his brother Phillip to Jackson Twp. Sandusky County, Ohio. They both lived and died there. They are buried in Smith Cemetery Burgoon, Ohio)

We know that Sophia lived for a number of years on the Northeast corner of RT 6 and Bark Creek, a couple miles north of Fremont. Cecil Long has always said that his mother Amelia Long would get very upset with Sophia as she would tell the children scary stories she had heard from her mother Elizabeth and is still being passed down through the generations.
