When Matilda Markley was born in 1823, her father, Peter Markley, was 33, and her mother, Mary Polly Kurtz , was 32. She married James Long on January 5, 1839, in Richland, Ohio. They had five children during their marriage. She died in 1858 at the age of 35. James went to Ashland Ohio where he went into the Pump making and well digging business for himself. He hired Joel Markley to assist him. It appears that he did keep in contact with his family as he introduced Joel Markley to his sister Lovina and they later married.
