Corp. William Ellis Strickland died in a Dublin hospital, Monday night from injuries which he received early Monday morning when the car in which he and four other Gordon County boys were riding and another car collided near Dublin. All five occupants of the car were service men, and all from Calhoun and Gordon County, and stationed at Camp Stewart. They were returning there after a week end at home. ..... Mr. Strickland was brought to Calhoun Tuesday, where he had lived all his life. He was the son of E. T. Strickland and Jewel Fite Strickland. He graduated from the Calhoun high school in 1938 and then worked in a local grocery store until his induction into the army. He joined the national guard in October, 1939, and went to Camp Stewart when his company was sent there Dec. 6, 1940, and has been there since then. He was married to Miss Ruby Thompson, Nov. 21, 1940, who survives. Other survivors are two brothers, Max and Eddie Strickland, paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lola Strickland and maternal grandfather, Mr. I. F. Fite, all of Calhoun. Funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Rev. W. H. Gardner officiated. Interment was in Fain cemetery, with Jackson Funeral Home in charge. Sgts. Staggard and Dabbs, from Fort Oglethorpe, were sent to the funeral to form a military escort for Corp. Strickland, and he was buried in his uniform with military honors.
