Mr. James Max Strickland, 74, of 1100 Dews Pond Road, Calhoun, died Wednesday, May 14, 1997 at 1:15 a.m. at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, following an extended illness. He was born in Gordon County on Sept. 10, 1922, son of the late Edmond Thomas Sr. and Jewel Fite Strickland. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Southwest Pacific. He was retired from the United States Postal Service after 37 1/2 years. He was an active member of Calhoun First United Methodist Church, where he was a certified lay speaker, a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Ellis Strickland of Calhoun, and Dr. Ed T. Strickland Jr. of Ocala, Fla. Survivors include his wife, Helen Pass Strickland, to whom he was married on May 3, 1942; a son and daughter-in-law Ronald and Cindy Strickland of Calhoun; a daughter and son-in-law Marsha and Randall Talley of Dalton; five grandchildren, Shane and Ross Strickland of Calhoun and Jay, Erin, and Kate Talley, all of Dalton; two aunts, Sylvia Ayer of Tallahassee, Fla., and Mildred Strickland of Calhoun; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral was Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m. from Calhoun First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Tom Kerr and Brian Clark officiating. Interment was in Fain Cemetery, with the Rev. David Gravitt in charge of graveside rites. Pallbearers were Shane Strickland, Ross Strickland, Jay Talley, Bill Pass, Chip Whitfield, Edmond Strickland, Stuart Strickland, Rusty Branson, and Gene Greeson. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Thomas Funeral Home of Calhoun was in charge of arrangements.
