Son of Caleb Abernathy Blake and Catherine Johnson, both originally from South Carolina. Caleb and his family moved from South Carolina to Murray Co., Georgia in the 1860s, probably following the Civil War, and Caleb died there in 1869.

In 1871, Caleb's widow Catherine and most of their children moved to Fannin Co., Texas. Samuel was about 22 years old at the time.

He married Roxanna H. "Roxie" Goodwin in Fannin Co. on Dec. 23, 1879.

They had five daughters - the first of whom died in infancy; the others were Congress E., Zora A., Elfie E., and Katherine R. Blake. Congress, Zora and Elfie were born in Montague Co., Texas (1883, 1885, 1888), and Katherine was born in Wilbarger Co. (1890).

By the 1900 census, the family was living in Estelline in Hall Co., Texas. According to his obituary, they moved to Paducah in Cottle Co. in 1903. Samuel died in 1933 and Roxie in 1949. Both are buried in Paducah.

Samuel was a Blacksmith by trade and owned his own shop.
