Mary M. Gerdes was born October 26, 1898 to Anna Swanson Anderson and Anton Anderson on a farm three miles east of Osceola. She was baptized on March 17, 1904 and confirmed July 12, 1914 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Osceola where she was a life long member. Her faith served as a guideline for her daily living and was a source of strength in each of life's trials.

Mary received the first eight years of her education at School District 40 and graduated from Osceola High School in May 1917. She then attended Kearney State Teachers College and taught in various country schools throughout the county.

After her teaching career she was employed with Doctors Shaw, Smith and Eklund in Osceola. Mary married Nanno Gerdes May 9, 1931. They had 21 years of happy married life together.
