Obituary-Marshalltown Times Republican (Iowa)
Date: November 16, 1934
Fred Vogel, Spanish War Veteran, Passes
Fred A. Vogel, 607 West State Street, a resident of Marshalltown since boyhood and a veteran of the Spanish-American war, died at 8:30 o'clock today at the Deaconess hospital. In the early part of October, when in Rock Island, Ill., Mr. Vogel suffered an injury to his foot. He was a patient in a Rock Island hospital for 10 days and was then brought home. Shortly after his return he was taken to the Deaconess, where he had since been a patient. Death was due to septicemia induced by the injury.
Mr. Vogel was born in Independence, March 13, 1881, the son of August and Elizabeth (Von Shaffner) Vogel. The family moved to Marshalltown when he was five years old and he had made his home here continuously except for the time he was in service in the Spanish-American War and four years when he was in the regular army.
He enlisted in Company E., 32nd regiment, U.S. volunteers, at the outbreak of the war. He was in the Philippines as a trumpeter in the mounted calvary and later served in the coast artillery and in the medical corps at Fort Warren, Mass. It was while in service at Fort Warren that he was married to Miss Blanche Ordway of this city, Dec 10, 1906. Two years later they returned to Marshalltown, where they had since made their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Vogel were the parents of one child, Gretchen, who died here Sept. 10, 1928. Surviving Mr. Vogel are the widow, two sisters,  Mrs. A.J. Fitzgerald, New York City, and Mrs. C.D. Hibbard, Minneapolis, and three brothers, August Vogel of Waterloo, Edward Vogel of Lexington Mo., and A.R. Vogel of Pontiac, Ill.
Mr. Vogel was a member of Marshall lodge No. 108, A.F. and A.M., the Royal Order of Moose and General Hasbrouck camp, United Spanish War Veterans.
Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday from the Pursel funeral home, in charge of Rev. William D. Foley, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church. Burial will be in Riverside.
