Vera was the first child of Richard and Jennie Spain. She had a brother Maurice and a sister Margaret. Her father left the family when she was quite young; her mother, Grandmother Mary, and Uncle John raised her in the Frankford area of Philadelphia. In 1903, Vera married Herbert Johnson who was a brakeman for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Her occupation at that time was as a millhand. Her second marriage was to Harvey Hamilton Miller Barret who loved her very much. They had no children. Sadly and suddenly at the funeral of her sister's husband (Harry Wallace) in November of 1953, Vera died of a heart attack moments after walking up to the coffin and saying "Oh, Harry." It was devastating to her husband, and the rest of the family.Father: Richard Spain
Mother: Jane Fairhurst
