Mary was born in Tennessee to Thomas T. Tuggle (1781-1829) and Nancy M. Bradford (1798-1879). She married in Tennessee first to James C. Champe about 1840. They had 1 child, a girl named Nancy Champe. They were divorced in 1848. A rare feat in those days. Mary then married Orrin LeGrande Partain on July 23, 1850 in Wilson County, Tennessee. They had one child in Tennessee, Mattie E. Partain Stroud (1852-1915). They came to Texas in 1855 in a covered wagon, according to family legend. On the trip, Alexander "Uncle Shan" VanBuren Partain (1855-1934) was born in Arkansas. They had 2 other children (4 in all), George Tuggle Partain (born in Texas, 1857-1902), and Caroline Partain Pickens (born in Texas, 1863-1956).
