Mary's obituary (see image on this memorial) indicated her parents' names were Gustave Schooley and Polly Pittman. Her death certificate gave the same names. The informant for the death certificate was "Mrs. J.S. Garland" [Mary's daughter, Annie]. Mary's memorial is linked to her parents, Gustavus Young Schooley (1818-1888) and Catherine A. (Pittman) Schooley (1820-1893). Polly seems a somewhat unusual nickname for a woman named Catherine; the reason for the nickname Polly remains unclear. To attempt to clarify matters, we looked at death certificates for some of Mary's siblings, with the following results:

1914 PA death certificate of Richard P. Schooley. Parents reported as "G.Y. Schooley" & "Katherine A. Pittman".
1915 PA death certificate of "I.W. Schooley" [Isaac W. Schooley]. Parents reported as "G.Y. Schooley" & "Cathern Pittman".
1925 Ohio death certificate of George Washington Schooley. Parents reported as Gustavus Schooley & "Cathern Peterman".
1933 PA death certificate of Gustavus Loraine Schooley. Parents reported as "G.Y. Schooley" & Catherine Pittman.
