Gustavus Loraine Hanks, the son of Benson and Mary (Schooley) Hanks. He was known by his descendants with the nickname Gusta, Gussie, and Gus. On November 10, 1909, Gustavus married Beda Avalene Crawford at the parsonage on South Richard Street, Bedford, Pennsylvania. Beda was the daughter of George Crawford and Hetty (Shoaff)(Crawford) Himes. Gustavus and Beda had several children: Samuel "Sam" Hanks, Mary Catherine Hanks, Gertrude Grace Hanks, who when addressed went by her middle name "Grace", John Hanks, Infant twin boys, and James Hanks.

One may discover Census records, where at one time Gustavus and his wife Beda and family, had their oldest Grandson Robert "Bob" Shirley residing with them for a certain period of time.


Gustavus Hanks occupation was a farmer. The farm was located in Breezewood, Pennsylvania. The land was previously owned by his mother-in-law Hetty Himes (Shoaff) (Crawford) Himes. Who had acquired the land from her second husband Samuel Himes. After the death of Gustavus Hanks, the farm was then kept by his descendants. They wanted this possession of Gustavus Hanks to be used for his own son Samuel Hanks "Sam" to reside on. After the death of the son Samuel Hanks, the farms estate was finally settled and sold. All the documents and recorded deeds are on file in the Bedford Courthouse, Bedford, PA.


In the latter years of Gustavus Hanks elderly life, he had shared the home with his one daughter Gertrude "Grace" (Hanks) Leader and her husband Horace. Gustavus died at this residence in Robertsdale, Pennsylvania.


Gustavus Hanks had been referenced to resembling in appearance to President Abraham Lincoln. There was a publication in the local newspapers, where in formal attire, Gustavus dressed up, to resemble in the appearance similiar to President Abraham Lincoln for the Bedford Bicentennial pageant at the Fairgrounds. The attached photograph is when Gustavus Hanks was in his formal dress, for the Bedford Bicentennial pageant. And when he also had a photograph taken with the Duke of Bedford. When the Duke of Bedford was visiting the Bedford County area. There are newspaper articles mentioning Gustavus enjoyed reading and studying about President Abraham Lincoln.


There have been many stories and folklore passed down the many generations in the Hanks family tree and other residents within the Breezewood & Crystal Springs, Fulton County Pennsylvania area, that Nancy Hanks (President Abraham Lincoln's mother) had once been in the Breezewood and Emmaville, Pennsylvania area long ago. Another Truax folklore story states someone owns a certain chair within the area and claims the chair was sat in by the belated Presidents Mother Nancy Hanks during her existence.

There has been a theory on just whether or not there may be a direct genealogy connection on how Gustavus Hanks family tree connects to the President Abraham Lincoln's own Mother's family tree. But there is no direct connection between Abraham Lincoln and Gustavus Hanks. They were cousins within the lineage of the forefathers in the Hanks family trees.

Anyone doing research would definitely discovery in the history recorded about the belated President Abraham Lincoln. Where President Abraham Lincoln had even informed his own biographer William Barton and his law partner William Herndon, that his own mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln was the illegitimate daughter of Lucy Hanks; who later married Henry Sparrow.

In the History of Brush Creek Township, Fulton County. William Hanks, (the 4 x Grandfather of Gustavus Hanks) is mentioned among the early settlers to the Fulton County Area. In the History of Brush Creek Township biography; William Hanks is mentioned as being a cousin to President Abraham Lincoln, Mother Nancy Hanks.

In the lineage written in the newspaper Press Herald, published on February 7, 1930, page 6. Lucy Hanks, the President Abraham Lincoln's Mother descends from Joseph Hanks, his father was John Hanks, and he is the son of William Hanks. The William Hanks in the lineage published in the newspaper article is the same 4 x Grandfather of Gustavus Hanks. But in Gustavus Hanks lineage, he is the son of Benson Hanks, his father was John Hanks, his father was Benjamin Hanks, and his father was William Hanks. Clearly showing the cousin connection mentioned in the recorded different published newspaper articles and in the History of Brush Creek, Fulton County, Pennsylvania. Anyone doing the Hanks genealogy would also find this evidence in other documents.


The Daily News Huntingdon, Mount Union, PA on November 11, 1971, page 2, column 3, has the published obituary for Gustaus Hanks written as G. L. Hanks. There is also an error in the obituary on the Christian name of his belated wife Ava written as Evelyn in the obituary. One can only speculate on why the mistaken Christian name Evelyn was used incorrectly in the obituary publication.


On the Hanks family headstone, one will find Gustavus Hanks name engraved as Gus Hanks. On the headstone one will visibly find the engraving of the last single digits of the year of his death showing a 1 and 2 clearly engraved on top of each other. Gustavus Hanks year of death was 1971 on November 10. In the Will and Estate settlement documents for Gustavus Hanks, located in the Bedford Courthouse, Bedford, Pennsylvania. On the one page in the estate settlement papers, there is a listing on what Gustavus Hanks daughter Mary (Hanks) Diehl had paid in cost occurred to have the engraver re-engrave the correct year of Gustavus death on his headstone. This is why anyone can view two different numbers on top of each other on the headstone. Since an error was previously made on the headstone with the wrong last digit in the year of death engraved as a 2. When the correct year last digit date should have been a 1.


The Hanks family headstone also has engraved the names of his wife "Beda", and his Mother-in-law Hetty Himes, and some of their children are engraved: the Twin sons, the son, James Hanks, and the other son John Hanks.

You will find the Hanks family headstone by starting at the pavement in front of the church, and walking five rows down the hill towards the middle of the cemetery, and you will locate the family headstone. In the Summer of 2013, after speaking with the caretaker of the Mount Zion Lutheran Cemetery via the phone, it was not known what happened to the original Mount Zion Lutheran Cemetery records. The caretaker was hoping that one day the records may be discovered.


Gustavus Hanks has a Deed, and a Will recorded in the Bedford Courthouse, Bedford, Pennsylvania.
