Lordy was the son of the Honorable Thomas Butler King and Anna Matilda Page King. He attended Yale and Harvard Law School, and was a lawyer in Savannah for several years before the Civil War and witnessed the fall of Harper's Ferry. He was the aide-de-camp of Major General Lafayette McLaws, who commanded a division of the C.S.A. soldiers. On Dec 13, 1862, he volunteered to hand carry orders to Brigadier General Cobb. The story goes that he was killed at the battle of Fredericksburg, and his body was found by his life long friend and personal body-servant, Neptune Small, who placed him in the finest pine box to be found, and returned him to Georgia where he was buried in Savannah. After the war ended he was returned to his family at Retreat Plantation on St. Simons Island, Georgia and was then buried next to his mother Anna.
