After graduating from law school in 1855, he studied and practiced in Savannah and also spent "considerable time" in New York City where he "read the law". He served in the 10th Georgia Infantry, Colonel Lafayette McLaws, commanding, and Read's Battery (Pulaski Artillery) in 1861. He was appointed Lieutenant and Ordnance Officer to Brigadier General McLaws about August 1861 and was acting aide-de-camp (ADC) by May 1862. He was formally commissioned ADC 7 July 1862 and promoted to Captain, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was on the Maryland Campaign on General McLaws' staff. After Sharpsburg the General reported:
To Captain King and Lieutenant Tucker, aides-de-camp ... I am indebted for their zeal and activity; their gallantry was conspicuous in the performance of their duties.
