Funeral services for Merlin James Beheng, age 72, of Miltona, were held on June 5 at Faith Lutheran Church in Miltona with Reverend Kari VanWakeren officiating. Merlin passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at his home.
Merlin was born on June 23, 1937, to John and Olga (Arvidson) Beheng in Spruce Hill Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and grew up in Spruce Hill Township. He attended country school and graduated from Central High School in Alexandria in 1955. He enlisted in the National Guard and served in the U.S. Army as Sergeant from February 4, 1956 - December 25, 1957, in Korea. Following his honorable discharge he returned to the Twin Cities where he worked as a truck driver until December of 1960.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Peterson on June 18, 1960, at Faith Lutheran Church in Miltona. He trucked with his brother for Beheng Bros. He was trucking until taking over the family farm in Spruce Hill Township in 1963. He retired from farming in 1991, but continued working in construction and with R&R Ready-Mix until the time of his death. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Miltona V.F.W. Post #7826. He served on the Miltona Co-op Store Board, Miltona Creamery Board and Spruce Hill Foundation Board. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, going for coffee, researching Spruce Hill family history and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Merlin was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Steven (Terri Gaarsland) Beheng of Miltona; two daughters, Joni (Rod) Wunderlich and Julie (Scott Christensen) Peterson both of Miltona; sister, Lorayne Ahlbrecht of Alexandria; brother, Darrel Beheng of Miltona; three grandchildren, Bill Wunderlich, Jenny Melby (fianc��, Dane Bosl) and Jill Schlemmer; along with many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Bill Wunderlich, Wayne Rediehs, Gary Mrnak, J. Howard Johnson, Trevor Rediehs and Chad Beheng. Honorary pallbearers were Jenny Melby and Jill Schlemmer.
Music was provided by organist, Kevin Lee and the church choir and bell choir. Burial took place at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria.
