"The first sawmill in the precinct was one brought across the Missouri River by Wilis Hill, in the Spring of 1857, the owner dying before it was unpacked; that operation performed by L P Hiatt, who set it up and continued to run it until the summer of 1858, when it was sold and removed to Pawnee City."
