Zachariah was the son of Obediah Ashby. His mother was probably Polly Bradshaw (married Beasley Ashby Feb 8 1800, Shelby Co.), but could be Mary "Polly" Figley (Phegley) (married Beady Ashby Feb 7 1810 Shelby Co.). There is some dispute about this. He married Louisiana Darnaby on Oct 7, 1824. They had at least 7 children. He died of Hopkins disease according to the 1880 mortality schedule.
