GREAT BEND - Edward Drees, 71, died Aug. 4, 2006, at St. Luke's Hospital on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.

He was born July 7, 1935, in Hays, the son of Fred and Bertha Binder Drees. A resident of Great Bend since 1963, moving from Hoisington, he was a customer service technician for Southwestern Bell Co., retiring in 1997.

He belonged to the Telephone Company Pioneers, Great Bend Kiwanis, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, Catholic Community of Great Bend St. Patrick Church, was a church usher, Knights of Columbus and Faithful Comptroller of the 4th Degree, Boys Scouts of America, Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow and received the Silver Beaver Award. He served in the U.S. Army.

On Jan. 4, 1984, he married Ronnie L. Boor in Reno, Nev. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Randy, Hoisington; three daughters, Carma Strayer, Hoisington, and Kelly Anthony and Christy Harmon, both of Calhan, Colo.; two stepsons, Ryan C. Williams, New York, N.Y., and Gregg Williams, Virginia Beach, Va.; a stepdaughter, Kimberly A. Williams-Cloyd, Manhattan; his mother, Bertha Drees, Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers, Kenneth, Olathe, and Tony, Athens, Texas; seven grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil; and a sister, Norma Drees.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a Knight's of Columbus rosary at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Wesley Schawe presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Memorials may be sent to the Great Bend Humane Society, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home.
