John Marcellus Benton, 81, of Gray, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin. Mr. Benton was born in Monticello to the late Herman Gay Benton, Sr. and Sally D. Ellis Benton. He and his twin brother, William Benton, were star athletes for the Monticello Hurricanes in football and track. In 1947, the Monticello Hurricanes football team was undefeated.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After the service, Mr. Benton moved to Gray where he remained most of his adult life and was a member of the Gray United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post 142, and Jones County Masonic Lodge.

Before retirement, Mr. Benton was a warehouse supervisor for the Weston Brooker Quarry.

His brother, Herman Gay Benton, Jr., three sisters, Julia Aurelia Shevlin, Sara Virginia Benton, and Annabel Louise Collins, all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his children and spouses, Faye B. Manning of Gray, Muriel and Tammy Brackin of Albany, and Toni and Larry Gulley of Mt. Airy, N.C.; grandchildren, Jacquelyn M. Plummer, Heather Y. Gulley-Gill, Brandy Eaton, and Cole Brackin; great-grandchildren, Bailey M. Plummer, Drew Plummer, Gage Plummer, Emmerick Gill, Lindsley Eaton, and Portor Eaton; great-great-grandchildren, Chloe Plummer, and Andrew Plummer; and brothers and sister, William F. "Billy" Benton of Brandon, Fla., Harry Ellis Benton of Atlanta, and Betty Gay Hardeman of Atlanta.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at West View Cemetery. Dr. John Brown officiated. Honorary pallbearers were Linton Jordan, E.C. "Brick" Nelson, Sidney "Bo" Wagner, Bailey Plummer, Michael Plummer, and Cole Brackin. Jordan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
