Betty Gay Benton Hardeman, age 93, of Monticello, passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2022, at her residence. Betty Hardeman was born in Jasper County on November 4, 1928 to the late Herman Benton and Sallie D. Ellis Gay. She graduated from Monticello High School and attended Crawford Long Hospital Nursing School.

Betty Hardeman lived in Clayton County for over 60 years before returning to Jasper County in 2008 and moved to her daughter, Gay's home which was not very far from the house she grew up in.

While living in Clayton County, she was a homemaker that never held a paying job but worked tirelessly volunteering and managing her family. She was a lifetime member of the Parent Teachers Association. She was an active member of the Jones Memorial United Methodist Church in Lake City. After returning to Jasper County, she tirelessly fostered over 250 kittens for the Winging Cat Rescue.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Scrub Wilson Hardeman, Jr.; and sisters and brothers, Herman Benton, Julia Shevlin, Annabel Collins, Billy Benton, John Benton, Harry Benton and Sara Benton.

She is survived by her children, Dave W. (Sheryl) Hardeman of Jonesboro, Katherine (Wes) Spencer of St. Petersburg, Fla., Gay (Barry) Morrison of Monticello and Gayle (Jesse) Slagle of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Dave Hardeman, Jr., Jason Hardeman, Sallie Anderson, Lori Stuart, Benton Spencer, Lindsey Morrison, Myra Oviatt, Hannah Palmer and Lowell Slagle; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2022, at West View Cemetery. Family members will officiate.
