John Williams was born near Brumley Creek along the Poor Valley in Washington Co, VA north of Abingdon; son of George Williams and Nancy Newhouse. In 1811, the Williams family crossed the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky and northwards across Ohio River into Franklin Co, Indiana Territory.
On 11 May 1820, John married Dedida Tharp in Franklin Co, IN. John and Deida lived in Columbia Twp, Fayette Co, IN until after their fathers died in 1844. Afterwards, the family moved and settled in Fulton Co, IL; likely bringing John's mother Nancy Williams with them. John died near small town of Monterey, in Banner Twp.
