THE JESSE WOODWARD FAMILY
Jesse Edward Woodward was born to Jason J. and Dorotha A. Drew Woodward on Dec. 5, 1868 in Wales, Michigan in St. Clair Co. When Jesse was 10 years old, he, his parents brother, Bryon, Cassius, William and Herman, and sisters, Sarah and Anna, move in a covered wagon to Harlan County in Nebraska, 2 years later the family moved to Custer County in a covered wagon and homestead about thirteen miles northwest of Callaway, Nebraska. When Jesse was twenty, his father died, so he had the responsibility of the home with the help of his brothers.
On August 12, 1903, Jesse married Rosetta Nelson in Broken Bow, Nebraska. His brother Will and Jessie Eddy wete married at the same time and they went to Denver on their honeymoon together. Rosetta was the daugther of
Chris and Julia Schreyer Nelson. She was born on Oct. 3, 1883 in a dugout in the Triumph community. Their first home was near the Milldale school house. Their four older children were born there. Merril was born on Aug. 5, 1904. He married Esther Rarden and they had six children: Detta (Wright), Cecil, Carolyn (Elliott), Peggy (Holeman), Larry and Gail. Verna was born on Jan. 24, 1906 and married Ross Weatherly. They had eight children: Lula Mary (Pitts), Rozella (Price), Dick, Betty (Martin), Bonnie (Bubak), Shirley (Brestel), Jerry and Gary. Ralph was born on Sept. 8, 1907. He was always in poor health and died in 1931. Jesse Jr. was born on Aug. 13, 1909 and married Frances Foran. They had 2 children: Mary Frances (Huff) and Jesse James "Jim". In Jan. of 1940 Jesse Jr.'s wife died leaving their two year old daughter and the baby, who was five or six months old. Rosetta and Jesse took these little grandchildren to raise. Later Jesse Jr. married Julia Halouska Seaney. They had three children: Marvin, Ellen (Veers) and Lois (Henney). Jesse Jr. died on Aug. 19, 1977.
When they moved to the Shaw farm at Finchville. Frank was born there on July 27, 1914. Frank has never married. In 1918 they bought a farm two miles north of Callaway were they again lived in a sod house. Elmer was born there on Sept. 2, 1922. Elmer and Frank now live together in Callaway.
Jesse died on May 2, 1952 at the age of 83. On Jan. 1, 1980, Rosetta died. The doctor said her heart simply wore out.
