Evening Kansan Republican, Saturday, November 1, 1952

Dr. James Rayburn, retired Presbyterian minister and widely known evangelist, died at 1:45 Saturday morning at Bethel Deaconess hospital following a long illness. He was past 76 years of age.

A resident of Newton for 35 years, Dr Rayburn spent more than 50 years in the ministry both as pastor and in evangelistic work that took him to all parts of the country.

The family home was at 300 West Broadway for a number of years and at 214 East First street for the past five years. Dr. Rayburn had been hospitalized since February 1951.

A native of Hudson, Ill., he was born Jan. 7, 1876, the son of Chalmers and Isabell Rayburn. He came to Kansas in 1884 and lived near Burns, later moving to El Dorado. In 1903 he was appointed director of Sunday School missionary work in Montana and three years later he entered the Presbyterian seminary in Omaha.

Following his graduation he accepted a pastorate in Marshalltown, Ia., and three years later entered the evangelistic field which remained his life's work until his retirement a few years ago because of ill health.

It has been estimated that 60,000 persons accepted Christ under Dr. Rayburn's long ministry. Two of his sons are ordained ministers. He was married Aug. 6, 1918 at Winfield to the former Elna Beck, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Rayburn is survived by four married sons, Rev. James C. Rayburn of Colorado Springs, Colo., Paul B. Rayburn of Eugene, Ore., Dr. Robert G. Rayburn of Pasadena, Calif., and Frank C. Rayburn of Kansas City, Mo.

Other survivors include a brother, Herbert Rayburn of Denver Colo.; four sisters, Mrs. Ida McPherson and Mrs. Mable Miller, both of Newton, Mrs. Helen Scott of Wichita and Mrs. Roy Wells of Dodge City; 11 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon 2:00 at the First Presbyterian church. Two of Dr. Rayburn,s sons, Dr. Robert and Rev. James, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Floyd E. Kaiser, pastor. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
