J.D. STAPLES, BLACKSMITH DIED TODAY Was Recognized as Maine's Champion Rifleman
Joseph D. Staples, well known local blacksmith, died early today at his home, 24 Wentworth street. He had been a resident of this city for 60 years. Mr. Staples was a member of the old Biddeford light infantry. For years he was recognized as the champion rifleman of Maine, frequently taking part in meets throughout the state. He was employed for years as a blacksmith in the old Gooch carriage shop at Harmon's corner, and later as blacksmith in the Pepperell mills. He retired about five years ago.
Mr Staples was born in Raymond, the son of Joseph and Betsey Walker Staples.
He leaves his wife and one son, Orrin, three daughters Mrs. J.R. Lavigne of Portland, Mrs. James Webber of Stoneham, Mass. and Mrs. Samuel Emerson of this city, a brother, Edwin T. Staples of Hampton Beach N.H., six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren
funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home on Wentworth Street.
