Obituary July 26,1940
Mrs J.D. Staples died Thursday at Daughter's Home
Mrs Shuah H. Staples, widow of Joseph D. Staples one of the best known among the older residents of this city, died Thursday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Bertha S. Webber Stoneham, Mass.
Mrs. Staples was born in Kennebunk daughter of Horace and Ann (Jordan) Chappell. Her age was 88 years, four months and 18 days.
She was a member of the Rebecca Emery chapter Daughters of the America Revolution and held offices in the chapter, taking an active interest in activities of the chapter for many years. For over 60 years she was a member of the Jefferson street free baptist church and of the united baptist church.
Mrs Staples was particularly esteemed in the neighborhood of Wentworth street where she made her home for many years. She was thoughtful and kind, taking an interest when anyone was ill in the neighborhood and in many ways showing a kindly spirit and consideration of the happiness of others. Even in late years when she was unable to get about herself she arranged to bring aid and cheer to others.
She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Webber, with whom she had been making her home recently since her illness became such that she required constant care, Mrs Cora Lavigne of Portland, and Mrs. Elsie S. Emerson of this city, a son Orrin B. Staples of this city and two brothers Willis W. Chappell of Kennebunkport and Charles H. Chappell of Lyman: also five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Dennett & Craig Funeral Home, 365 Main Street Saco
