A FATAL FALL
SUDDEN DEATH OF JOSEPH STAPLES SATURDAY AFTERNOON
He fell from a Load of hay in the barn floor, striking upon the Back of his head and receiving injuries from which death resulted within an hour.
Joseph Staples, a well known Biddeford citizen fell from a load of hay Saturday afternoon, receiving injuries which caused his death withing an hour.
Mr. Staples worked for Charles Proctor in the Proctor neighborhood, Lower Biddeford, and Saturday afternoon had drived an ox load of hay into the barn floor to unload. He was standing upon the load near the rear of the rack when the oxen started and Mr. Staples lost his balance, falling heavily backward and striking upon the of his head and neck on the barn floor. He was stunned by the fall and picked up and carried into the house, when he revived and lived about an hour.
It was reported that the fall had broken his neck but the JOURNAL is informed that such was not a fact, but that his death resulted from internal hemorrhage of the vessels of the brain.
Mr. Staples was 69 years of age and leaves two sons, Joseph D. blacksmith at J.H. Whitten's carriage shop, and another son who lives at Hartford Conn. Funeral services were held at 3:30 this afternoon.
