GRIMES

Frank Grimes, son of Morford T. Grimes and Margaret McCleary Grimes, was born May 25, 1900, at Derby, Iowa, and passed away at the Lucas County Memorial Hospital April 16, 1983, of an apparent heart attack. He was 82 years old.

In 1918 he graduated from the high school in Clarinda, Iowa, where he lived with his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Joe Wayt. Derby, at that time, had no upper high school grades.

After graduation he joined the Army and served till the end of World War I. He later attended Iowa State College.

He returned to the family farm near Derby and continued active farming until his retirement. He maintained an Angus cow herd and never lost his love for the land. He lived all his life on the farm where he was born, which had been in the family for more than a century.

He was a member of the Derby Methodist Church and the Derby American Legion Post. He was a fifty year member of the 40 & 8 Society of Des Moines. He was active in the Legion affairs of his home post.

On April 24, 1953 he was married to Betty Bowie of Des Moines, who survives him. His other survivors are two sisters, Margaret Wayt of Shenandoah, Iowa and Mary Gill of Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Lois Grimes of Des Moines; four nieces and their families, as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles.

Services were held Tuesday, April 19, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, with the Rev. Eugene Koth, of the Chariton United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Derby Cemetery.
