WAYT

Margaret Lucille Grimes Wayt died March 6, 1986, at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, where she had been a resident nearly four years. She was 95 years old.

Margaret was born July 29, 1890, at Derby, Iowa, to Morford T. and Margaret McCleary Grimes. She graduated from high school at Illinois Women's College (now McMurray) at Jacksonville, Illinois, in 1910, and from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, in 1914.

On August 18, 1915, she married Joseph D. Wayt of Indianola, at her parent's home in Derby. Their first years were spent in Kansas City, Clarinda and Fort Dodge, where Joe was a YMCA secretary. After a few years on farms near Derby and Columbia, Iowa, they moved to Shenandoah in 1928, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Joe died in April 1973.

Margaret was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Shenandoah as long as her health permitted and was especially proud of her life membership in what was then known as WSCS. She was also a 50 year member of Chapter 81, Order of Eastern Star and a 64 year member of Delta Delta Delta.

All of her life she treasured her Lucas County roots, subscribing to the Chariton newspapers and enjoying the Lucas County histories.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Frank and Charles Grimes. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia and husband Richard Frank of Essex, Iowa; four granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Gill; and two sisters-in-law, Betty and Lois Grimes, all of Des Moines; and three nieces.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, with the Rev. Jim Dale officiating. Interment was in the Derby Cemetery at 3:30 p.m., with the Rev. Paul McKinley, of Chariton officiating.
