Dennis Estill Hamer was born July 12, 1882, to Franklin Augustus Hamer (b. 1853, IL.) and Lou Emma Francis (b. 1860), TX., in Pleasanton, Atascosa County, Texas. He stood 6 feet tall, had blue eyes, light hair and a blonde complexion. He worked as a stockman in Kingsville, Kleberg County, Texas. Dennis joined the Texas Rangers as a Special Ranger, July 12, 1916--December 1917, (attached to Co. C)and served as an investigator. He joined the Regular Rangers January 19, 1933--January 24, 1935 (captain, Headquarters Company). He was then discharged. Dennis was a policeman in Houston, Harris County, Texas. He was a pay car guard, Grant Brothers Construction Company. In 1917--1918, he was a city detective based in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, and had also been a city detective in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. He owned mines in Mexico and lived in Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona for 27 years prior to his death. He died January, 5, 1967 in Nogales and is buried in the Nogales City Cemetery, Santa Cruz County, Arizona. He must be buried in an umarked grave or else isn't in the Nogales City Cemetery, as several people have tried to find his grave and headstone, but could not find it. Dennis had three brothers and a nephew who were also Texas Rangers. They were, Ranger Flavious L. Hamer, brother; Ranger Francis Augustus "Frank" Hamer. brother; Ranger Harrison L. Hamer, brother and Francis A Hamer, Jr., nephew.
