He was one of the signers of South Carolina's Ordnance of Secession, December 20, 1860 and also served as one of the officers when it was written.

He was a member of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina 1830-32, the South Carolina Senate, 1834-54 and served as Lieut-Governor of South Carolina, Dec. 11, 1854 - Dec 10, 1856
