John's father was a signer of the original Ordinance of Secession in South Carolina. John is named after an ancestor who was a captain of artillery in the Revolution. On Memorial Day 2016 a marker was placed and a hero's ceremony marked his namesake's grave on a Marine base in Beaufort. This John DeTreville served in the South Carolina Artillery as well. He died at the Robert E. Lee Soldier's Home in Richmond. There is no stone for him in the DeTreville lot, but records indicate he is in there. His son is.
