James was born to William H. Mounts, Sr. & Elizabeth McMonnis in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Bryson Mullan on Jan 20, 1842 in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Obituary
James Mounts, Sen., died here on Friday morning, the 22nd inst., aged 77 years. Deceased was born and reared in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was there married 50 years ago to Miss Elizabeth Mullan. To them were born twelve children, six boys and six girls all of whom are still living. For a half century the grim monster death never entered their household. Three of the sons, Henry, Thomas and Arch are here. Richard lives in Clark county, James Jr. is in Pike County and Frank is in Minnesota. Two of the daughters are here and one lives in Pennsylvania, one in Ohio, one in Texas and one in Minnesota. Mr. Mounts came here at the close of the war with his family and bought a farm adjoining the village on which he has lived ever since. He was a Presbyterian and an upright man, always good for his contracts and avoided those vices that so often entrap the feet of the unwary. January 25, 1892.
