The printing on Mary Lou's monument is not an engraving like on most headstones. Coloring the writing in chalk was the only way to make the print show up in a photo.
The monument is four sided and made to mark four graves. However, only one other grave is noted on the monument besides Marys.
Mary Lou Beatty was the daughter of David Beatty (born in 1780) who had an uncle with the same name.
Mary Lou's grandpa was the famous William Beatty that fought in the American Revolution along with his brother David.
Mary was born in Kentucky. She grew up in Ohio. There she met her future husband "Levi Jacobs".
Mary and Levi had most of their children in Ohio. Then, they moved their family to Illinois. They ended up having over ten kids.
Mary was a nice christian lady and raised her kids in the faith.
In Illinois, Mary and her husband acquired quite a bit of farm land and orchards.
Mary was really into sewing and quilting. She also canned fruits, jams and vegetables. She and other women around town had a sewing circle going. They made clothing.
Mary also made fine clothing.
Mary and her husband were really good about helping less fortunate people and widows with children.
After the Civil War, there were even more "less fortunate
people". Mary and her husband joined with others to help these people.
In 1882, Mary became a widow. She lived several more years
after the death of her husband.
Now days, we don't know why Mary was not buried in the cemetery with her husband.
