Sister Bennett was born in Shottan, near Hawarden, Flintshire, North Wales, June 22, 1924, and was 80 years and 10 months old at the time of her death. She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in December, 1850, and emigrated to Utah with her husband and children in 1863. On the voyage across the ocean she met with her first great sorrow in the death and burial at sea of her little 3-year old son John. They crossed the plains in Capt. Samuel D. White's ox train, reaching Salt Lake City Oct 15, and located in Fillmore. In the spring of 1864 the family moved to Deseret where, with her family, she passed through all the trials incident to the making of a home in that place. When Deseret was temporarily abandoned in 1868, the family removed to Holden, where they have continued to reside. Elder Bennett died in 1870, leaving the care of the family to Sister Bennett who has reared a most honorable family, firm in the Gospel. She was a mother of 14 children, eight of whom service her, with 78 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren, making a total of 145 living descendants. Sister Bennett was truly a mother in Israel as her many virtues will testify. She was related by marriage connection to every home but one in Holden and leaves relatives in many parts of Utah, Idaho and Canada. She is the mother of Benjamin Bennett who for may years was superintendent of the Idaho Fall branch of Z.C.M.I., also of Edward Bennett, the present county assessor for Millard County.
The funeral was numerously attended, the Fillmore ward choir under the leadership of Prof. William Beeston, rendering some beautiful selections, all the local ward choir being close relatives of the deceased. Suitable remarks were made by President Thomas C. Callister, Elders Thomas Memmott and John Cooper and sister Nancy M. Ashley, president of the Relief society to whom Sister Bennett had been a counselor for 25 years, and by Bishop A. G. Stephenson.
