John G. Sailor was born July 27, 1848, in Carroll county, Ohio, and passed away on Sept. 29, 1931, after a short illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. A. Fenton, at Iowa City, at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 2 days. He was the son of John and Catherine Sailor and the youngest of a family of nine children, all of whom preceded him in death in order of their birth except one who died while serving his country in the Civil War.

He came with his parents to Cedar county, near Cedar Bluff, in 1855, and has spent most of his life here except for a few years in the western part of Iowa where he homesteaded and a short time in Nevada, and a period of twelve years in Johnson county, Iowa. He was married on Sept. 13, 1872, to America Chrisman who preceded him in death on Oct. 23, 1923.

Since the death of his wife, he has made his home with his nephew Chas. Sailor at Cedar Bluff and with his daughter Mrs. R. A. Fenton at Iowa City.

He is survived by two children, Fred Sailor of Eyota, Minn. and a daughter, Mrs. R. A. Fenton of Iowa City, 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The son, William, passed away in 1902.

His friends were country wide and one of his main joys was to know and meet people. He was known as a good man, always fair, honest, kind and thoughtful of others and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He has gone the way of all flesh and may we all travel life's pathway in a like manner.

He was a member of the Methodist church from boyhood. He belonged to the Order of Oddfellows of which he was always a loved and faithful member.

Funeral services were held at the church at Cedar Bluff on Thursday, Oct. 1st at 2:00 o'clock and burial was in the West Evergreen (Gunsolus) cemetery.
