Her 2nd husband John Maynard married: June 16, 1646.

Sudbury, Massachusetts vital records state clearly that Mary, the widow of Thomas Axtell, married John Maynard, but what was her ancestry? Mary was most likely the daughter of Edmond Rice. Thomas and Mary were wed and had children baptised in Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire. The same place that Edmond Rice lived and had children before coming to New England in 1638. Edmond had a daughter named Mary, born at the right time to be the wife of Thomas Axtell.

When Thomas and Mary came to New England after 1643, they settled in Sudbury, next door to Edmond Rice. Also, after Thomas died, Edmond Rice bought the land and home where Thomas and Mary had been living. One of Thomas and Mary's children was named Mary, but the other two were named Lydia and Henry, siblings of Mary, if she were a daughter of Edmond Rice.

So, the above facts lead one to believe that Mary Rice was born in Stanstead, Suffolk, and baptised there on August 23, 1619. She was the second of eight children born to Edmond Rice and Thomasine Frost. She moved with her parents to Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire about 1626. She grew up in Berkhamstead and married Thomas Axtell there in May, 1638, just before her parents sailed for New England. A few years later, Mary & Thomas also came to Sudbury, Massachusetts, and settled on a plot of land which they bought from Edmond. They had two young children at the time, and another was born in Sudbury, just before the untimely death of Thomas. Soon after, Mary wed John Maynard, a neighbor who was a widower with a young son. Mary and John had five more children in Sudbury. In 1672, John died, naming his wife Mary as executrix of his estate.
