Lydia Maynard was probably born in Sudbury, Massachusetts on June 1, 1644. She was the daughter of Thomas Axtel and his wife Mary Rice. Axtel died on March 8, 1646. Lydia's mother married John Maynard on June 16, 1646. Lydia married Joseph Moore, one would guess, sometime in 1668, because their first child was born on April 14, 1669, but the record of their marriage is not to be found. In the records of the Middlesex County Superior Court are the following documents: (1) on January 20, 1669, John Maynard gave bond of 20 Pounds for the appearance of his daughter Lidiah to answer to a charge of fornication with Joseph Moore; (2) Joseph Moore confessed to fornication with Lydia Maynard and gave a bond of 20 Pounds on Janaury 26, 1669 for his appearance in court; (3) on January 28, Joseph Moore was summoned to answer to the charge; (4) a petition was filed on October 5, 1669 by Elizabeth Moore, mother of Joseph, and Mary Maynard, mother of Lydia Maynard, now Moore, asking that the imposition of corporal punishment be relieved, and a fine imposed. Obviously, they were not married in January of 1669, but were married by October 1669.

Despite this rather rocky beginning, Joseph and Lydia were married for almost 50 years and were the parents of ten children, all born in Sudbury. There are no records of Joseph holding office in Sudbury, he was surely a farmer, as were most men in those times. Lydia died on November 23, 1717 in Sudbury. Joseph lived several more years and died in Sudbury in 1726.
