Thelma Matthews, age 81, died Friday, July 17th at Friends Fellowship Community. She was born in Wayne County, June 1, 1928, to Carl B. and Lillian Weiss Toschlog and has resided in the Richmond area her entire life. Thelma graduated from Fountain City, IN High School in 1946. She worked for McQuiston Insurance Agency until she met her husband, Glen W. Matthews. They were married on August 23, 1950, and resided most of their life on Minneman Road. She was bookkeeper for the family business, R. Matthews & Sons, Inc. trucking company for over 25 years. She was a founder and president of the Hoosier 100 Chapter of ABWA, a booking agent for her children's rock and roll band, "The Undecided"and attended Community Bible Study and Bible Study Fellowship. She was involved with Christian Women's Club and was a part of the Emmaus community. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Richmond where she served on the Finance committee and headed the Building committee for the Fellowship hall built in 1972. Thelma and Glen were avid race fans, attending the Indianapolis 500, Hoosier 100 and the Daytona 500 for many years, along with sponsoring and following their children's sand drag racing. They camped for many years on the Ohio River with family and friends, where Thelma became an accomplished water skier. She also loved writing poetry, knitting and reading. Survivors include her son, Gayle Matthews and his wife Denise of Richmond; her daughter, Donnita Kelly and her husband Tim of Robbinsville, NC; four grandchildren, Alea Flockhart, Stephanie Peavler, Deena McCreery, and Kurt Kelly; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Lorin Toschlog and his wife Marilyn and Kenny Toschlog, both of Richmond; sister, Mildred McMichael of Springfield, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Oleta Dubois and Marie Houchin and her husband Bruce of Richmond; nieces; nephews and cousins. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Glen, who died April 30, 1999; parents; a brother and a sister. Visitation will be from 9 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, at First Baptist Church, 1601 South A Street, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. James Spon officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery. Doan & Mills Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
